Welcome

Welcome to Skipton Quakers

If you are new to Quakers, you will find plenty on these pages to help you know more about us as a local meeting – as well as more about Quakers generally.

Quakers believe there is something uniquely precious in everyone. That means we welcome everyone, and treat everyone equally. Even if we have yet to meet, you will find you are immediately welcomed and among friends. We also believe that everyone can encounter something spiritually beyond the self. This means we do not feel the need to have one individual acting as a minister but instead, allow everyone to minister as they feel moved by the spirit to speak. Our meetings start, and often remain, in silence. Ministry comes out of silence, and our faith is considered a lifelong search for truth. There is more about what we believe on the page ‘About Quakers’.

Skipton is an active local meeting and we meet for silent worship every Sunday, in person at our Meeting House and online. Quakers have a meeting house rather than a Church and can come together to meet and worship anywhere. We are also actively involved in community work that supports our commitments to peace, environmental and human justice, and equality. Find more about what Skipton Quakers get up to on our Facebook page.

Quakerism is 400 years old and grew out of non-conformist Christianity during the upheavals of 17th Century Britain. You may have heard of other non-conformist groups such as the Methodist, Baptist, and United Reformed Churches. Quakers are also known as the Religious Society of Friends and today we are part of a world-wide movement that also finds rich meaning and value in other faiths.

The Skipton Meeting House can be found on The Ginnel, Newmarket Street. Turn into the Ginnel, between the art shop and the vacant shop next to it.  We are through the gate towards the bottom on the left. We usually meet at 10.30 on Sunday. There is more information under ‘events calendar’. Please feel welcome to contact the meeting clerks for more information smclerks@gmail.com

The Skipton local Quaker Meeting is part of Quakers in Britain, Quakers in Yorkshire and the Craven & Keighley Area Meeting
